Captain America Comics #1, Certified by CGC, Realizes $716,750 in Heritage Sale

It may have been the Golden Age, but Captain America brought the red, white, and blue to lead Heritage Auctions’ Comic Books Signature Auction on September 24-26, 2026, with two classic keys certified by CGC®, realizing nearly $1 million combined between them.

Leading the auction was a Captain America Comics #1 graded CGC 9.0 (lot 91004) that realized $716,750, making it the fifth highest sale ever recorded for this Golden Age issue. Published in 1941 by Timely Comics, Captain America Comics #1 by Jack Kirby and Joe Simon features the first appearances of Captain America, Bucky, and the Red Skull. Originally selling nearly a million copies from newsstands in 1941, there are only 216 examples of Captain America #1 recorded in the CGC Population Report today.

Marching by its side with the second-highest auction result was a Captain America Comics #3 graded CGC 9.4 (lot 91005) that realized $268,400. This comic features the first Stan Lee work at Timely Comics, which would later become Marvel Comics, where Stan Lee helped create many iconic characters and stories. This sale sets a new record for the issue, more than doubling its previous high-sale mark of $90,000 realized in a Heritage Auctions sale by a CGC 8.0 in 2022. There are only 135 examples of this comic in the CGC Population Report, and only one graded higher.

Other CGC-certified comics sold in this auction include:

  • a Wonder Woman #1 graded CGC 8.5 (lot 91019), which realized $158,600

  • a Batman #1 graded CGC 2.5 (lot 91031), which realized $158,600
