Elvira, the iconic vampy hostess created and portrayed by Cassandra Peterson, emerged in the early 1980s as a campy horror personality with a sense of humor as sharp as fangs. With her iconic dark look, she became a playful parody of classic horror seductresses while developing a personality all her own, introducing generations of viewers to old horror films while punctuating them with sarcastic jokes and double entendres.
After first appearing in comics in Elvira’s House of Mystery #1, published by DC Comics in 1986, the popularity of the goth goddess simply wouldn’t die. She was later featured in comics published by Marvel and Dynamite. In 2026, she was in the spotlight for a crossover event with DC Comics’ Harley Quinn. But her longest and perhaps most iconic magazine series is Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, published by Claypool Comics for 166 issues between 1993 and 2007.
